East Village? Affordable?

The rapid development of San Diego’s East Village has always been a turn off – for the past 4 years I have spent most of my time in East Village watching small business forced out by rising property cost and the warehouse district quickly becoming a sterile condo district.
SD Space 4 Art brings a little bit of light to the table. Their team of “progressive San Diego artists, architects, writers, filmmakers, musicians and dancers with background and experience in affordable housing and community built projects” is developing an ‘arts community center’ in the San Diego’s East Village. They claim the new(old) space “will have around 30 units of various sizes, 4-5 of them work/live, and significant common space, all at affordable rates.” Alright, I’m curious… They will be showing the space on Saturday. Dec 5 from 12-6pm. I wouldn’t mind stopping by, and it’s exciting to think what this could mean for my favorite part of town. Read more about this project at sdspace4art.org

The well-informed Annie Leonard simplifies the big ideas of today in her on-going video series. In this short, Annie gives a light and friendly presentation of the dark and terrifying blender that is, consumer culture. Find more of Annie’s short films here.
Welcome to Today

Today is the beginning of the end of the first decade of this millennium. As you travel through your mental history books, the past 10 years have certainly been, well… important to say the least. Many good things and plenty of bad things have defined the decade, but something I’ve learned this year (in poker terms) is one should never make bets based on what has already been lost. This idea has inspired The Motivated Youth to some degree – the idea that our actions shouldn’t be based on the past. Of course learn from mistakes, but even the things that worked before may not work this time around, it’s a whole new hand we’re playing with.
We welcome you to our web site, as today also marks the launch of TheMotivatedYouth.com – The site will be updated frequently as we, a handful of contributors, share our perspective on who, why and what to do. This will be our platform for announcing events, gathering support, and spreading good ideas.

It’s no mystery that we’re bombarded on all fronts with advertising. Some can be funny or interesting, some an eyesore. On a recent internet prowl related to Buy Nothing Day 2009 [see previous post] I found a group called the Space Hijackers highlighted an initiative to remove some of the eyesores.
Teams of “obviously highly trained professional” (maybe…) Advert Removers took to the London Underground and flipped over advertisements to their blank side, effectively reclaiming public spaces back from corporate interests.
I stumbled upon this little nugget via Guerrilla Innovation, a wonderful collection of artistic and social projects from around the globe that get people to stop and think. Check them out and get inspired!
